Air Sealing. The Importance Of Sealing The Deal.
Air infiltration, occurs when outside air enters a house uncontrollably through cracks and openings. By properly air sealing any cracks and openings, we can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs, improve building durability and create a healthier indoor environment.
It's unwise to rely on air leakage for ventilation because it can't be controlled. During cold or windy weather, too much air may enter the house. When it's warmer and less windy, not enough air may enter. Air infiltration also can contribute to moisture control problems. Moldy and dusty air can find its way into a leaky house through attics or foundations, and may even cause health problems.
Air sealing can be one of the most cost-effective, healthy, energy efficient improvements you can make to your home.
Insulation. A Continuous Thermal Boundary
Once your home is properly air sealed it is important to increase the levels of insulation throughout the entire house. Proper installation can dramatically effective the R-value of your insulation, that is why we offer a variety of insulation materials ranging from dense pack cellulose, rigid board, and two part polyurethane foams. As a result you will feel an improvement in comfort and a reduction in energy usage.
Whole House Weatherization. Be Open To An Easy Fix.
Replacing windows and doors in hopes of gaining greater energy efficiency is usually not a cost effective strategy. After all, it may take more than twelve years for windows and doors to pay for themselves in energy saved.
However, properly sealing the envelope around windows and doors is a very doable and cost-effective strategy. If the caulking on your windows and exterior doors is cracked or eroded, then unwanted air is infiltrating your home. Replacing old, weathered caulking is a simple, straightforward project.
Duct Sealing. It Pays To Think Tight.
- Improves indoor air quality. Leaky return ducts located in attics, unfinished basements, crawlspaces and garages can draw pollutants into homes. These include dirt, dust, mold, and fumes from solvents, radon gas and carbon monoxide exhaust from cars.
- Promotes better humidity control. Air conditioning systems cool and dehumidify indoor air by recalculating it over an evaporator coil. Leaky return ducts can draw hot and humid air out of attics and crawlspaces and overwhelm the capacity of the air conditioner coil to cool and dehumidify the indoor air. Air that is not properly dehumidified can be uncomfortable and promote the growth of indoor mold and mildew.
- Offers improved comfort. Duct sealing increases the amount of conditioned air that is distributed to the living spaces within a residence. The heating and cooling systems can operate more efficiently resulting in quicker recovery from nighttime setbacks and a more consistent level of comfort throughout a house.
- Helps to lower utility bills. The average homeowner spends more than $600 per year on space heating and cooling. Duct sealing can reduce this cost by between $60 and $120 per year, making a home less expensive to operate.
